Ruby was a huge fan of high school reunions, because she had been to so many. Not only did she like going to her own, but she often would go with her friends. She had developed some very close relationships over the years with friends she made when she was a kid.

When Ruby graduated high school, she attended a community college. She never really knew what she wanted to do, but just kept going to school hoping for some type of inspiration. When Ruby was 20, she met Ruben and moved to Texas. Within a few months, Ruby was married and expecting a baby. Her life was changing so fast. She felt as though it was under control, but being away from her friends and family wasn't the life she anticipated.

Within a few years and 3 children later, Ruby and her husband Ruben moved back to her hometown. Ruby was thrilled, because she wanted to be around not only her family, but her friends from childhood. She was hoping to allow her kids to have the same environment she experienced as a kid. Ruby was so happy, but she wanted to go back to college to get her degree, so that she could help support her family.

Over the next few years it was very hard for Ruby trying to work and maintain her college classes. She had started a state school hoping to get her degree in Accounting. During the time her kids were growing, and her husband Ruben was working at a local health clinic in the x-ray department.

Ruby's marriage was existing at best. Ruby has suspected him to be cheating, because she noticed he was always getting text messages. She wasn't texting him, and he always walked off to answer them. One night Ruby asked Ruben what he had been up to and if he was cheating. Ruben said he was cheating with a girl he worked with. Ruby knew it was time to let Ruben go after several years of a painful marriage.

Family and friends always were Ruby's support system. Ruby had grown up with these people, and they had never let her down. Everyone she knew was happy Ruben was out of the picture.

Getting through the hard divorce was just part of the process. Ruben decided a move back to Texas was his next step. He wanted his kids with him, but knew that Ruby should have them. He and Ruby agreed that summers would be Ruben's time with his three kids. Then Ruby would get her three month break to hang out and visit her friends.

Ruby had planned to attend plenty of high school reunions all over the state. Her friends were from several different cities, so she got invited to everything. Traveling was something Ruby loved to do when her kids her gone. She was able to see many different sites, and also have some alone Ruby time. Ruby was looking forward to each summer, but would always miss her kids while they were gone with Ruben.

Mon, 04 Jun 2012 01:49:00 -0700 Making Use of a Yearbook http://belndacarson.posterous.com/making-use-of-a-yearbook http://belndacarson.posterous.com/making-use-of-a-yearbook

Yearbooks are incredibly important, as they are memories that we keep with us for the rest of our lives. When it comes down to it, there is a Yearbook committee that spends the entire year gathering pictures from big events and just around school, also. They also gather information about their seniors, so that they can be in the senior section.

The committee that has to deal with the yearbook has several responsibilities to attend to. There is a layout to consider and the need to avoid cluttered pages. They need to consider how to put pictures together in an attractive way, which can be hard when there are so many pictures taken. This means that they are going to have to pin down what the best pictures are from each event that happens throughout the year.

These people that photograph events also spend much of their time working on the book directly. They spend a lot of their time devoted to perfecting this memory book so that by the end of the year, everyone has purchased one. The look on the faces of so many excited students can be incredibly heartwarming, especially when they find pictures of themselves and their friends at fun events like dances and football games.

It matters not as to why you are in the yearbook, but there are many reasons you could be. If you are on various sport teams or are more popular, you will be all over the book. If you are part of other groups, you could be a part of those pictures too.

You could one day show these to your children, which will certainly be an amusing experience. There is so much that will be different by the time they are ready to look at these books with you. Show them how different everything ends up evolving.

If you keep them safe long enough, you may even be able to share these books with your grandchildren. What a treat that would be, since their generation will be that much more different than your own!

There are many changes that you will notice by the time you are a grandparent, so that will be interesting to experience. With such a generational gap, there is nothing you won't learn that won't shock you.

There are so many reasons to take an active part in acquiring yearbooks. It doesn't matter what sub-sect of the student populous you are from, you are really going to want to keep these to show in the future. This is not something that beyond what normal people do, so embrace it.

Mon, 04 Jun 2012 01:10:00 -0700 How to Find Old Yearbooks http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-find-old-yearbooks http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-find-old-yearbooks

Many people experience moments of nostalgia and want to look at old yearbooks. Often, yearbooks can be difficult to find when they have been misplaced or lost. Fortunately, there are different ways to get access to an old yearbook. By using the resources available to you, it is possible to obtain a yearbook and get a glimpse at that particular time in your life.

Sometimes the easiest way to get an old yearbook is by directly contacting the school. High schools and universities tend to keep a copy of each class yearbook. Find out if you can order and purchase it. Information regarding old yearbooks may be available on the school's website. If information isn't listed on the school's website, call the school to inquire if there they can assist you in obtaining the yearbook you want.

Contact libraries within the local area of the school. You can go to the library and look at the book if it is available. If you are not able to check the book out of the library for a few days, you can take pictures or make photocopies of pages within the book. The workers at the library may also be able to help you figure out how to get your own yearbook.

Check websites that offer digital or electronic copies of yearbooks. These websites usually offer to buy, sell, and assist individuals with finding books. The types of books available on these websites tend to cover all educational levels, such as elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. The volume of books on these websites increase at a rapid rate as their popularity grows. You can search for the book you want by looking up the state, county, or city where your school is located. If you are not able to find the book, you can ask to be contacted when the book is added to the archive.

Another resource you can utilize is electronic yearbook apps. There are apps that will help you find old classmates or an alumni group. Contacting old classmates or an alumni network can lead you to people who will either let you borrow a yearbook or inform you how to get one for yourself.

Social media websites are also an excellent way to get in touch with former class members. Many high school and college graduates re-establish contact with each other through these social media sites. It is another way to locate someone with an old book you can buy.

Check auction websites that sell items. These sites sell all types of miscellaneous items. Some of the websites that have electronic versions of the books also use these auction websites to find old books and increase their catalogue. You may be able to find the book you are looking for at a discount rate.

Be persistent with your search. Initially, it may be difficult to find yearbooks. It is beneficial to regularly check different websites since their inventory is updated on a daily basis. By using all of these different options, your search will end up being worthwhile.

Mon, 04 Jun 2012 00:55:00 -0700 How to Track Down Old Classmates for a School Reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-track-down-old-classmates-for-a-school http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-track-down-old-classmates-for-a-school

Many people have unfortunately lost touch with their old friends over the past few years that they used to hang out with on a daily basis. This includes all of the people that you graduated from high school and elementary school with. When something like a school reunion comes up, contacting some of these former friends is essential. As sad as this is, is it possible to ever get in touch with these people ever again, even if all you have is a name? With how powerful the internet is today, signs definitely point to "Yes." Here are some unique ways that you can use to try and reunite with your former friends.

People Searches – Does it Work or Is It a Scam?

Many people these days like to sign up for these "people searching" websites that promise to locate anyone in the world and provide information about them. You see ads for them all over the television and internet. If these sites are actually telling the truth, it's scary to think about what types of information they may have on you!

The only major problem it seems is directly related to many of these websites is the fact that hardly any of them actually work! Similarly, the process is usually the same with each website. You first enter in your person's name, it shows that a match has been found, and then they ask you to enroll in a membership in order to see any of the information. The problem is that even if these websites do give you information, most of the time it is incorrect. These websites work by analyzing public records and phone books and storing all of that information. Because of this, changes are the information that you receive is old, outdated, and just plain wrong!

The Almighty Power of Facebook

One of the most popular methods out there on the internet that has actually been proven to work efficiently time and time again is by using Facebook. Now boasting over 900 million active users a month, if you're looking for someone, chances are they have a Facebook account. Even if you believe that they don't, if you know of some of your friend's family and friends, you can look them up as well. The beauty of Facebook is that so many people are connected by one person or another. First things first, in order to find this person and come in contact with them; you need your own Facebook account. Be sure to add a picture and a description of yourself if you're first creating an account. This way, you won't look like some faceless profile trying to contact someone. Begin by typing the person's first and last name at the top of the page. After you search here, you can filter results according to the town that they live in or the school that they graduated from. These options definitely come in handy when trying to narrow down your search. One you found them, don't hesitate to send them a message!

Which to Choose?

It seems that in terms of the current options available on the internet, Facebook is by far the best way to reconnect with all of your former classmates before a school reunion comes up. With over 900 million active users each month, it is highly likely that whoever you are searching for is on there. As described above, make sure to stay far away from those sites that allow you to search for people directly. Most of them exist only to make money and for the most part, they provide incorrect information. Now that you know this information, it's time to start searching!

Sun, 03 Jun 2012 15:09:00 -0700 The Purpose of a Highschool Reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/the-purpose-of-a-highschool-reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/the-purpose-of-a-highschool-reunion

It is pretty standard knowledge that there are not too many perks out there that go along with being young, and at the same time, it is perhaps the freest time of your life. When we are young, we are bound to very little and the responsibilities we are supposed to be dealing with are relatively light in scope. Even our problems with money tend to focus on how to pay for going out with your friends and not whether or not you have some paycheck money left over to cover the water bill. And yet, it is the easiest time in one's life to feel left out, as you watch all your older siblings run through their high school days as if everything is fun and carefree. Well, truth be told, this is simply not the case. High school is most often one of the most anxious times in the life of a young person, where they are forced to deal with all sorts of people who will make snap judgements based off the clothes they wear or what they are interested in. These judgements tend to be harsh and immature, and one does usually not get the opportunity to really redeem themselves until years later during a one night party known as a highschool reunion.

Now, do not expect everything to be better all at once.

More than likely you will still bear bad feelings toward people who seemed to go out of their way to be rude in high school.

All one must do, however, is not be petty in nature, but cordial in appearance.

We must try and let go of any grudges and just move beyond a hurtful person.

When it is all said and done, we are all human, and all go through tough and intimate stages of our lives without fully getting the chance to understand why a disagreement may have come about in years past. It is just good to know that you are not letting that disagreement hang over your head so many years later.

Of course, it is important to keep in mind that while a highschool reunion is an event that helps one look back at the years they spent in high school fondly or not, and not the event where you get revenge. Spending your life thinking that there will one day be a single night in your old high school gymnasium where you will be able to get back at all those people who wronged you or let you down is foolish. It in fact shows little signs of maturity on your part.

The purpose of a highschool reunion is actually to get back in touch with people you have not had the opportunity to see and speak with in a long time. You get to go back to your old gymnasium and drink legally in the open as you catch up on all the old memories you had tucked away or maybe didn't even realize existed.

Sun, 03 Jun 2012 15:08:00 -0700 What to Talk About at a Class Reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/what-to-talk-about-at-a-class-reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/what-to-talk-about-at-a-class-reunion

One of the biggest worries people have when going to their high school class reunion is conversation. There are a lot of people out there that are shy and do not want to seem silly or boring. You really aren't boring, but luckily--That is where we come in.

We are going to go over a few different things that you can talk to with your old class mates when you get the chance. We are going to provide tips that truly show how interesting you can be as well as making the event more interesting in general.

When you are starting to have conversations with people, there are a few things to avoid for sure. Make sure that you avoid politics and religion. These are very personal and controversial topics that usually cause someone to get upset at some point.

If you want to avoid unnecessary drama, then political and religious conversation needs to be avoided. That and personal, insensitive questions need to be avoided, as well.

There are several pretty easy topics you could bring up in conversation. If you pick a really good one, you could certainly break the ice properly. Make it less awkward by appealing to their interests. Ask them what they went to college for. Ask them what their favorite experiences were in college. This is just the beginning.

Consider asking them about their families and spouses. Where did they meet their spouse? How many kids do they have? How cool are their kids? What kind of cool pets do they have? The list goes on. This provides a platform for a reciprocal conversation.

You could talk about maybe their goals in life as of right now, where they want to visit or where they have visited, what kind of education experience they had (college stories are always fun), and the list goes on. The reason we go to these events is so that we can catch up with everyone. What they are looking for is to see how everything turned out for everyone. Just remember that picking topics that people are interested in is a sure fire way to keep them talking and then it should have a pretty good snowball effect.

Other topics could be about the best experiences people have had in their lives. There are good times and there are bad times, but it is best to concentrate on the best times. It is great to ask them about their spouses, how they met, and how amazing they are. People love gushing about the love of their life, so it makes sense that a conversation could really thrive on for a while. It is a lighthearted and fun approach to conversation.

When going to your high school class reunion, it should be a free and comfortable environment for everyone. By coming up with the best, most sensitive conversation topics; this could be a fantastic evening. Keep an open mind and remain positive and it should be a pretty great evening.

Sun, 03 Jun 2012 13:29:00 -0700 Reconnecting With Former Classmates If a School Reunion Comes Up http://belndacarson.posterous.com/reconnecting-with-former-classmates-if-a-scho http://belndacarson.posterous.com/reconnecting-with-former-classmates-if-a-scho

Over the past few years, tons of us have lost contact with our old friends from elementary and high school. The problem seems to arise when a school reunion comes up. Even if you have a tiny amount of information, is it ever really possible to get in contact with old friends again without going to the crazy extremes of hiring someone like a private investigator? The answers today seem to point to "Yes." Within this great age of the internet, here are some ways that you can go about reconnecting with old friends.

People Searches – Does it Work or Is It a Scam?

There are many websites that claim to have the information on anyone you are looking for as we have all seen mentioned on TV and advertised all over the internet. Sounds a little scary, right? If these claims are true, imagine what type of information they have on you!

The Dominant Power of Facebook

One of the best methods to go about tracking down former classmates is by using Facebook. Yes, that Facebook. The same website that now has over 900 million active monthly users. Chances are that all of those friends that you are looking for are on Facebook. Even if they aren't, there are other possibilities of their family and friends being on there. In order to track these people down, the first step you need to actually take is to have a Facebook account. Unfortunately, Facebook doesn't allow anyone to search through their database of profiles unless you have a profile of your own. After signing up, you should add a picture and a little bit about yourself. This way, when you contact your old friends, they will know exactly who you are and won't feel like they're talking to a spammer with a fake profile. To begin, simply type in the person's name at the top of the page. You can then alter various options like their location as well as the school that they graduated from. If they are found, you should definitely send them a message and see about meeting up again!

Which is the Better To Use?

It seems the best way to reunite with your old friends before a school reunion is through Facebook. Since there are over 900 million active users each month on the site, chances are you will easily be able to find your friends or even their family members with a simple search. As warned above, stay far away from the sites that allow you to people search. Most of these sites will give you wrong information and simply just want your money. What are you waiting for? It's time to get searching and reunite with those old friends!

Mon, 30 Apr 2012 06:21:00 -0700 A Yearbook Is Worth A Million Words http://belndacarson.posterous.com/a-yearbook-is-worth-a-million-words http://belndacarson.posterous.com/a-yearbook-is-worth-a-million-words

With the passage of time, people do find that their memories get a little foggy. People want to have a memento to remember their past with. Many times people remember what their life was like as a kid in high school and they are glad they purchased a yearbook to keep those memories fresh. When students buy a yearbook, they usually do it so that they can remember those days, years later.

Every year, high schools sell yearbooks. Students like to purchase their yearbook so that they can see all the pictures of their friends and the events that they attended. When they are given their yearbook, many students spend hours going over those pictures, reminiscing the times that they have shared with their friends.

One of the biggest traditions that students have is to ask their friends to sign their yearbook. They do this to have special notes to remember them by and to look back at the friendships that they have formed. As people continue to grow, they know that they will eventually part ways and begin a new chapter in their life.

When students think of those that have made an impact on their lives during their time in high school, students think of teachers as well. They will even ask these teachers to sign their yearbook so they have a connection to them as well. These teachers have made an impact and their signature is just as important to them.

As students approach their last year in high school, their senior yearbook becomes one of the most important things that they have to remember that time by. They purchase that yearbook to remember all the people they have spent time with and have reached so many milestones with. They do realize that they will be moving into a different chapter in their lives and they want to remember those people that they have spent such a long time with and growing up with. This is their memento to take with them into a new part of their life.

There are times that people do look through their yearbook when they have started a family. The do this to remember the different things that they did in their younger days and remember the people that meant a lot to them. The pictures and the different messages that are written in those yearbooks help them to remember those times clearly.

As parents talk to their children, they find that they are able to share a good laugh with them when they look through their yearbook together. Many kids don't think of their parents as teenagers and are able to view them in a different light. Parents are able to show their kids what they did during their teen years and laugh at the differences in their lives. Kids never believe their parents were kids and yearbooks are wonderful proof to show.

As students approach their parents about purchasing a yearbook, they are doing it so that they are able to remember the times that they have spent with their friends. They don't always think of the fact that they may be sharing that same yearbook with their future kids and maybe grandkids. It is a wonderful way for anyone to remember their youth and time spent in high school. As they look at these pages, the memories remain clear and bright.

Tue, 10 Apr 2012 01:42:00 -0700 Ex Drug Dealer Executed at High School Reunion http://belndacarson.posterous.com/ex-drug-dealer-executed-at-high-school-reunio http://belndacarson.posterous.com/ex-drug-dealer-executed-at-high-school-reunio

It reads like something out of a spy novel, but there was actually an assassination at a recent high school reunion. Steven Potter, who bears no relation to Harry Potter, was executed in grisly fashion by two cartel hit men at a high school reunion in Orlando, Florida.

High school classmates describe Potter as a laid back stoner with minimal ambition. He enlisted in the Marines before graduation, shipped out right after, and survived two tours in Iraq as a sniper scout force recon. He was embittered by the experience. The killing was apparently not the issue. It was the low pay. Why should Cheney and Halliburton make billions of the carnage, while the grunts doing the wet work made pennies?

Potter began dealing cocaine. He fronted Mike "Mako" Giovanni a kilo, and when he didn't pay on time and tried to flee, Potter clipped him in a local Irish Pub. A cartel member saw the ballsy hit, and recruited the ex-Marine. Potter became a narcotrafficker and hit man who handled the tricky wet work.

He botched a hit, accidentally killing the wife of a man he'd been sent to kill. Potter didn't know that the man was the husband of the Don's favorite mistress, who he was having offed so she could service him sexually with greater frequency. She didn't die immediately, but was laying bleeding to death slowly. Potter was depraved, and raped her as she died.

The Don despised the husband. He had a surveillance camera installed in the house to watch the murder. When he saw the rape he flipped out, and was tempted to kill Potter. Except he remembered all Potter had done. He agreed to let him live and leave, so long as he never dealt drugs again.

Potter left, but was soon poor again. He began dealing drugs. The Don found out, and ordered Potter's death for breaking his word.

Potter laid low for years, but decided to attend his reunion even though he know the Cartel might whack him. He would risk dying to see his old high school love. He had enlisted the day after she told him her father would never let them be together. She had married, but recently divorced. Risking the reunion was stupid, but holing up for years had made Potter lonely. Better to be dead than wonder each day about his lost love. His first and only love.

Potter met his old flame, told her he loved her, and she said the same. He told her they had to leave immediately. She asked why. He said he'd tell her later, she had to trust him. She said she did. Though confused, and frightened, she agreed, and kissed him. Bystanders grew misty eyed.

Two assassins were at the reunion pretending to be classmates. They opened fire with Uzis as the reunited couple kissed, and then made a hasty exit before the cops descended.

Sun, 25 Mar 2012 17:15:00 -0700 Nostalgia for the Pre-Digital Age http://belndacarson.posterous.com/nostalgia-for-the-pre-digital-age http://belndacarson.posterous.com/nostalgia-for-the-pre-digital-age

There is getting to be a great deal of nostalgia for a time when technology wasn't as central to our lives now that baby boomers are nearing retirement and generations that grew up surrounded by computer s are coming of age. However, technology has its good and its bad just like anything else. There are online yearbooks. There are computer viruses. There are spam e-mails. There are connections made with loved ones.

The nostalgia for an analog world exists, though, partly because the parents and grandparents of the baby boomers embraced a sort of social amnesia. The horrors of the first half of the 20th century were so vivid and damaging that the best thing to do was to forget. It was easier to create a new epoch than to remember the first world war that killed millions, the desperation of the Great Depression, or the atrocities and mass destruction of the second world war.

In the United States, the period after the second world war was a new epoch, defined by prosperity and growth . A new way of life was born with the building of highways, the creation of the suburbs, and the institution of the GI bill, which allowed servicemen to go to school, get an education, and become professionals. Those GIs had seen some of history's most awful events, and perhaps as a result they tended to insulate their children. Even though the Korean War was fought when the baby boomers were still children, they were protected from it.

That left the baby boomer generation naive in a way. They may have chosen to test their ideals, but the great machinations of society didn't present them with the kind of hardship that makes people introspective. It was a time of relative security, economic growth, massive proliferation of consumer goods, and the evolution of a dynamic consumerist lifestyle. Events conspired to create a unique time in which the past was left behind and the future opened up, bright and inviting.

No boom lasts forever, however, and the largesse of the 1950s and 1960s inevitably gave way to the economic challenges and social cynicism of the 1970s. It's no surprise that this change coincided with the time when the baby boomers started hitting 30. After Nixon, the country examined its conscience and re-examined its position in the world. The idyllic post war era was gone, and because it was caused by a unique combination of events it will never be repeated.

In the second half of the 1980s, a new boom began, but this one was fundamentally different than postwar boom. The idea behind postwar America was that if you invest in people, they'll make the country great. The idea behind the boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s was that if you invest in technology it will make expensive people obsolete. While the 1950s were defined by the isolationism that always occurs when nations must rebuild after a war, the tech boom was defined by the things computers do best: connection and communication.

There is no room for isolation, either for nations or for people, in our technology driven world. News travels fast: an event is documented and communicated around the world in a matter of minutes, creating sometimes unpredictable and unstoppable reactions. In a sense, the butterfly of chaos theory is manifest in this time: it flutters its wings on one side of the world and creates a hurricane on the other side. While this is exhilarating for those who grew up with technology, it can be terrifying for those who did not.

Hence the nostalgia. Luckily, although the world moves at a faster pace now and there is no way to turn the clock back to a different age, there are places to indulge one's nostalgic urges. We have to beware of computer viruses, yes. But we can also peruse online yearbooks and remember what it was like - or what we wish it had been like - way back when.

Fri, 23 Mar 2012 07:38:00 -0700 How to Put a Yearbook Together http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-put-a-yearbook-together http://belndacarson.posterous.com/how-to-put-a-yearbook-together

Supposing you have your own non-profit organization for summer, seniors or kids. Maybe you homeschooled your kids and want to give them some semblance of school social life. A yearbook is one way to officially classify your organization as a school, even if it's just you as the principal, and a few kids that you educated or socialized with over a short period of time. Yearbooks are a great way to commemorate memories don't you think? And since many of them basically have the same layout, they are easy to put together even if you aren't a journalist or photographer.

First, photos are a given. They are the main components of the yearbook. You can browse through various snapshots and ask your participants to choose the ones they like the most. Name tags can be placed directly under the photo as well as an alias, just for the fun of it.

If you're putting your yearbook together for an organization, you can categorize it by classes or sections. This is somewhat self-explanatory, since you can separate your seniors, juniors or those who are involved in specific studies or activities. Also be sure to use an alphabetized system.

A yearbook sort of tells a story, so you can also give concise descriptions of group activities or sports that made the school or organization a close-knitted extended family. If there's a swim team, soccer or cheerleading team for example, these are must haves in your yearbook compilation.

Let's remember the personnel, who instructors were. They supplied the path for success, self-discipline, as well as understanding. Home schooled kids who are artistically inclined may wish to take part being the yearbook's editors. They can provide the needed synergy for producing an extraordinary yearbook.

How will you conclude your account of good times? Validate the yearbook with autographs from close friends. This kind of helps it be a lot more inspirational. It will constantly guide to remember classmates in the future. Once you go your separate ways, you can always remember those you love through pictures.

These are just a few tips that can be used to make your own yearbook. By including several sections to make it look official, you can have your yearbook printed and shared. Also, you can store it digitally, since this version can't be destroyed in the event of a fire or other natural disaster.

Making memoirs associated with school times are really worth your time and effort, because whenever you refer to the, it provides smiles and remembrances of your own time there. Yearbooks aren't simply for school children, but for any occasion you like.

Fri, 23 Mar 2012 07:28:00 -0700 Traditional Yearbooks http://belndacarson.posterous.com/traditional-yearbooks http://belndacarson.posterous.com/traditional-yearbooks

Yearbooks are a well-kept tradition that started many years ago. These books are used for many reasons and the most important reason is to preserve students memories while in school. Yearbooks are books that can make people smile the day they get them and many years after.

The use of yearbooks date back to the Middle Ages. Their yearbooks were used to record the legal decisions of that time. These decisions are the same decisions that were used to build legal systems across the world.

Unfortunately, there aren't many of these yearbooks around today to view but the concepts of yearbooks have had a lasting impression. Decades after the Middle Ages schools thought to use yearbooks to record the graduates of their schools, boosting their reputation for turning out successful people.

Year after year, yearbooks continued to evolve into different versions. The first version of a school yearbook was a thin publication. It was filled with sketches of the graduates and a little information about them such as their dates of attendance, name and time of attendance. It was a popular publication but not engaging.

As the trend caught on, students took over producing yearbooks. These yearbooks were filled with a lot more than the previous one. Students filled these books with student written literature, calendars and jokes along with the information about the students of the school. This was a version that was very entertaining for the students as well as showed who graduated from that school.

The direct ancestor to the modern yearbook was introduced with the introduction of the picture camera. These yearbooks were filled with actual pictures of the students that attended the schools, pictures of the events that took place during the year as well as other information that was approved to go into the yearbook.

Today's yearbooks are filled with a multitude of things. There are so many school activities that schools and students engage in and those things are captured in the pages of a yearbook. Pictures of students are still the most popular aspect of these books though. Production for yearbooks start almost immediately as the year begins and they are ready for students as the year comes to a close. This is a great way to close the year for graduating classes, a memory to take with them.

One of the biggest joys of having yearbooks is having friends and faculty sign those books. For some, those signatures and notes are all that are left of pivotal friendships from a person's childhood. Yearbooks are a tradition that will continue to be celebrated and participated in.

Sun, 18 Mar 2012 21:03:00 -0700 Yearbooks Evoke an Inevitable Nostalgia http://belndacarson.posterous.com/yearbooks-evoke-an-inevitable-nostalgia http://belndacarson.posterous.com/yearbooks-evoke-an-inevitable-nostalgia

It is almost impossible not to feel at least a little nostalgic looking through high school yearbooks. Regardless of our experiences growing up, regardless of how fun or frustrating our school years were, when we look back on them there's always something about those memories that are special.

The high school years aren't easy. For everybody, the immense physical, emotional, and intellectual changes that we go through during that time keep us off balance. We're expected to act grown up because we're starting to look like adults, but we're still kids at heart, more interested in play than anything else. We're emotionally and financially tied to our parents, but we're also straining for our freedom.

Even though our memories of high school revolve around friends, the experience is heavily focused on competition as well. We each choose what is important to us. An athlete might aspire to make the starting line on the football team. A smart kid might aspire to get into a good school. Whatever objective we choose, we're not the only ones, and we lock ourselves into competition with everybody else who's pursuing the same goal. To make matters worse, dominance drives emerge for the first time during puberty, so for the first time we are aware of hierarchies. Inevitably, once we're aware of them we want to be on top.

There is also fierce competition between the groups of people pursuing each objective. The kids on the starting line think football is important; the kids on the Honor Roll think grades are important. Anybody who invests heavily in reaching the goal they set for themselves also invests him- or herself in the idea that the goal is worthy and is, in fact, more worthy than any other goal.

Competition aside, high school is a time for big dreams and plans for the future. Nearly every high school couple discusses getting married and having kids, regardless of how impractical that outcome really is. High school athletes dream of getting to the big leagues. Drama geeks dream of landing a big movie role. Class leaders dream of successful business careers or political aspirations. It is a time for feeding the ambition that will carry us into our future.

Life after high school rarely bears much resemblance to the plans we made in our teens. We soon discover that life is more about great obstacles than it is about great expectations. We find that our high school sweetheart, sweet as he or she may be, is just one fish in a sea full of fish. Unpredictable events change our direction dramatically, which is sometimes to our benefit and sometimes to our detriment, but which rarely takes us on the course we envisioned. We change our ambitions and our tactics as we stop imagining the life we will lead and start to live the life we're given.

Our teenage years are a unique time, and who we are then is a unique version of ourselves, which we leave behind as we progress into adulthood. Over time, that part of us that was so vibrantly and awkwardly alive fades. We set aside the elements of our personalities that don't fit into the regimented lives we lead. Our grand illusions break off, and we live in the real world instead.

Still, that time and those parts of ourselves are not gone entirely. The things that were important to us - our friends, our goals, our dreams - are all captured to some extent in our high school yearbooks. That's what makes those volumes so special. We keep them so we don't forget who we were when we started.
